UN official says that “we have much to learn from the methods implemented by Morocco in the African continent”:

MAP logoMorocco has developed an “advanced African policy” thanks to its investments in banking and insurance, stressed on Wednesday in Rabat, the Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Carlos Lopes.

“From an economic perspective, we have much to learn from the methods implemented by Morocco in the African continent,” said Mr. Lopes in a statement to MAP following a meeting with the delegate-Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mbarka Bouaida.

ECA’s executive secretary welcomed the “very important” cooperation relations with Morocco, expressing the UN institution’s determination to further deepen these relations and support the Kingdom’s actions in the African continent.

Lopes said that his talks with the Moroccan official were an opportunity to discuss ways to strengthen African industrialization.

For her part, Ms. Bouaida said that Morocco is “very committed” vis-à-vis ECA’s actions and maintains a “very good cooperation” with the UN regional body.

Morocco regularly attends the annual meetings of ECA’s experts, noted the minister, recalling the holding last year in Marrakesh of ECA’s ninth forum, which brought together African ministers of Economy and led to a significant number of “strategic” conclusions. Morocco is considered by the ECA as a “role model” for economic integration in Africa, she noted, adding that Lopes’ visit in the Kingdom is part of regular consultations between the two parties.

Created in 1958 by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations, ECA plays a dual role as a regional body of the United Nations (UN) and as an integral part of the regional institutional landscape in Africa.
