Hurriet Daily News (Mersin, Turkey, June 28, 2013) — Morocco claimed the gold medal in men’s football after a penalty shootout victory over host Turkey in the final on June 28 in the 2013 Mediterranean Games.

The Moroccans kept their nerves during the shootout to outlast host Turkey at the Tevfik Sırrı Gür Stadium in Mersin.

The Mediterranean Games football tournament is played between the under-19 teams.

Morocco took the lead in only the first minute of the game thanks to a header from Hicham Khaloua, but Turkey fought back with two goals from Abdülkerim Bardakçı and İbrahim Coşkun.

Morocco equalized in the 70th minute with a long-range effort by Adam Ennaffati to force the game into overtime.

There were no goals in the extra time and the game went into penalties.

Morocco won the shootout 3-2 to claim the gold medal in the Mediterranean Games, leaving Turkey to settle for the silver medal.
