MEP describes as ‘outrageous’ embezzlement of humanitarian aid sent to Tindouf | Maghreb Arab Press

The European Parliament remains outraged over aid embezzlement by the Polisario:

MAP logoSocialist member of the European Parliament, Hugues Bayet, described as “outrageous” the embezzlement of aid sent by the EU to the forcibly held population in the camps of Tindouf in south-western Algeria.

“The embezzlement of humanitarian aid is by definition and in all circumstances outrageous,” Hugues told MAP in the wake of the disclosure by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) of a report documenting the diversion of aid sent to the population in Tindouf camps.

The MEP wondered if measures have been taken to address this embezzlement especially that the report was conducted in 2007 but not disclosed until few days ago.

“What measures the commission intends to take to embed transparency into this case?” he wondered.

This an issue relating to transparency of control mechanisms in the EU, the MEP stressed.

“I hope that this disclosure will help the EU relaunch all useful initiatives to settle the Sahara issue which has long lasted,” he added.
